1. 1

A quintuplet is one of five babies born to the same mother at the same time. The five together are quintuplets (or, in informal talk, ). The word sits in a clear set: twins (two), triplets (three), (four), quintuplets (five), then and so on. It is a hospital, news, and family word; people do not use it for five random children of different ages. In music, a quintuplet is also five notes squeezed into the time usually given to four — same idea of ‘a set of five’, different world. This entry is the baby.
