When you do something self-, you do it in a way that shows you are sure of yourself. You walk in, you speak, you try, without looking as if you are waiting to fall. It is simply the adverb from self-confident: the -ly ending that says “in this manner.” Though actually, the same manner can sound warm or a little sharp, depending on the voice around it. “She answered self-” may be praise. “He smiled self-” in a story may mean the writer wants you to roll your eyes. In everyday speech, people often just say , or “like she was sure of herself.” This longer form is tidy, a bit written, and not a word you need in every chat.
