The act of judging your own work, progress or ability yourself, instead of a teacher or manager judging it. It can also mean the form or set of questions you fill in to do this.
自我評估
Picture a form that normally comes back to you with someone else's judgement on it — a teacher's, a manager's, an official's. Now picture the same form handed to you blank, with your name already in the box marked assessor. You have to look at your own work, or your own year, and put down the number yourself. That is the picture inside self-assessment: the seat that belongs to the judge, with you sitting in it.

Formed from self- plus assessment, so the word says literally 'an assessment of oneself' — the judgement and the thing judged belong to the same person, which is what both modern uses turn on.
由 self-（自己）加 assessment（評估、估算）構成，字面就是「對自己做的評估」。這個組法直接對上現在的兩個用法：評的人和被評的人是同一個，差別只在被評的是表現還是收入。
