From Medieval Latin secretarius 'confidant, one entrusted with secrets; clerk who keeps records and writes for another', from Latin secretum 'a secret, a hidden thing'. The original secretary was literally someone trusted with private matters — which still underlies every modern sense, from the office worker to the Secretary of State.
