A scaremonger is a person who spreads stories on purpose, so that people become worried or nervous — often to win votes, sell papers, or push some other advantage. The word is an insult: you use it when you think the danger is being made bigger than the facts. It is scare plus monger, an old word for a seller (a fishmonger sells fish); a scaremonger “sells” fear. Though actually, the practice of doing this — deliberately making people worried to gain something — is scaremongering. This word names the person who does it. You may also meet a verb, to scaremonger, but the noun for the person is what you will hear most. News and use it a lot; it is not a compliment.
