Careful: this spelling covers more than one word. The one with a picture behind it is the tool — a flat metal blade whose edge is cut into a row of small V-shaped teeth, which you push and pull across wood until the wood comes apart. From that blade you get the verb (to saw). The past tense of see, and the 'old saw' meaning, only look the same; they are not this blade seen from another angle.

要先分清楚:saw 這個拼法底下不只一個字。真正有畫面的那個是工具——一片扁平的鐵刃,邊緣切出一排小小的 V 形齒,你推一下拉一下地在木頭上來回,木頭就被一點一點磨開。動詞的 saw(鋸)就是這片刃在動。至於 see 的過去式,還有 old saw(老話)那個意思,可以想成只是碰巧同一個拼法,不是這片鋸刃換個角度看。原始詞典資料23 筆記錄
