1. 1

A handsaw is a small saw you hold in one hand to cut wood. It has a flat metal blade with a row of sharp V-shaped teeth. You push it and pull it; there is no motor. Carpenters use it when a big electric saw would be too , or when there is no power. It is an ordinary workshop word, not a fancy one. The name is simply hand plus saw — a saw for the hand — and the same idea shows up in nearby languages. Though actually, if you ever meet handsaw in Shakespeare (a hawk from a handsaw), that is a different old word, from a name for a heron. It only looks the same. This entry is the tool.
