    The feeling you have when you are sad, or the state of being sad — often when a happy time is ending, or when you feel sorry about someone else's unhappiness.

    sadness 是形容詞 sad 的名詞，指「難過」這個心情本身。它不可數，所以會說 feel sadness、deep sadness、a sense of sadness，不會說 a sadness 或 sadnesses。這種感覺可以想成「心裡沉沉的、安安靜靜的那種難過」——比 grief（親人離開時的悲痛）輕，也比 unhappiness（長期過得不快樂）短，常出現在快樂的事情要結束時，或看到別人不好過的時候。
