Every use of this word starts from one Latin word: rex, a king. From there it goes two ways — it stays a king (the plain noun, the title after a name, the state that brings a case in the king's name), and it travels sideways into the names of animals, where 'king' became a breeder's compliment to a coat.

From the word’s history

English took rex straight from Latin rēx, 'king'; the breeders' use arrived separately in about 1920, from the Belgian rabbit breed castorrex, 'beaver king', named for fur that resembled a beaver's.

Wiktionary entries for Rex and rex, supplied in this packet: 'From Latin rēx ("king"). Doublet of rajah and roy.' and 'From Latin rēx ("king"), referring originally to rabbits of the Belgian "castorrex" breed, so named because their fur was similar to that of beavers. Entered English around 1920.'
