A monarch is a king or a queen: the one person at the top of a royal family who is the official head of a country. Some monarchs still hold real power. Others, like the king or queen of the United Kingdom today, mostly open buildings, visit hospitals, and stand for the country, while elected people run the government. We also say the monarch to mean whoever is king or queen at the time, not one named person. The word is fairly formal; in everyday talk people more often say king, queen, or the royal family. There is a well-known butterfly called a monarch too, but that is another use of the same spelling. This entry is the king-or-queen meaning.
組成From Greek mónos (only, alone) + arkhós (leader): the one who rules alone. In English this is the same idea as mono- + -arch.
