Picture two names written on a poster with a gap between them, each one turned to face the other. Versus can be thought of as the word that sets that face-off up: it does not describe either side, it just places them opposite each other so you look at them together. Sometimes the two sides are fighting; sometimes they are simply two options laid side by side for you to weigh.
