To remonstrate is to tell someone, firmly, that you strongly of what they have said or done. The usual pattern is remonstrate with a person, or remonstrate against a plan. It is formal. A teacher might remonstrate with a student who is being ; a diplomat might remonstrate with another country. You are not just nagging: you point out the problem and want a change. Though actually, it is cooler than shout and warmer than file a complaint — it still sounds like a human talk, just a serious one. In everyday English people more often say object, protest, or tell someone off, depending on how sharp they feel.
