Remonstration is the name of that telling: the act of saying, firmly, that you strongly disapprove of what someone has said or done — or one instance of it. If you remonstrate, what you are doing is remonstration. It is a formal noun, even less common in speech than remonstrance. Writers use it when they want the process: after much remonstration, the plan was dropped. Remonstrance often names the protest as a thing (a letter, a statement); remonstration more often names the speaking-up. Though actually, many careful speakers treat them as near twins, and you will not go far wrong if you hear them as the same idea in two shapes. In class, protest or objection will usually do the same job in simpler clothes.
