The Raj is the time when the British government ruled India, before India became independent in 1947. English speakers almost always say “the Raj” or “the British Raj,” with a capital R, as a name for that period of rule, not for rule in general. You meet it in history class, in books and films about colonial India, and in phrases like “during the Raj.” It is a formal, historical word; ordinary talk about today’s India does not use it. Though actually, raj in Hindi simply means rule or kingdom — English narrowed the capital-R Raj to one famous stretch of British power. It does not mean a person.
組成Borrowed from Hindi राज (rāj), “rule, kingdom,” ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ- (to rule / to set right). As a name for British rule in India, it is that noun used as a proper name. Doublet of rex, rich, and (in history writing) Reich.
