Racialism is an older, more word for racism: the idea that people can be sorted into “” and treated as better or worse because of that, and the unfair systems that follow. dictionaries usually treat the two as the same idea, and that is how you should read it in almost every sentence. Though actually a few writers try to split them — they use racialism for the theory that are real and different, and racism for hate and unfair treatment. Most people do not make that split, and in the news you will almost always see racism, not racialism. The word was built in 1882 from racial + -, when race still often meant a nation or a people; from about 1890 it followed the newer use of race for groups sorted by skin and ancestry. It can sound old-fashioned or like a university word. If you meet it, read it as racism.
