核心畫面

You can think of a quoit as one flat, weighty thing that fits in the hand: a ring or disc of stone, metal, rubber or rope, heavier than it looks, made to be swung and let go. Where that flat thing lands decides everything else. Thrown at a post, it becomes a game. Thrown for distance, it becomes a contest. Left in a field, too big to lift and resting on other stones, it becomes an ancient monument.

From the word’s history

The oldest recorded meaning is the plain one: Middle English coyte meant a flat stone. It came through Old French coite from Latin culcita, the same Latin word that gives English quilt. So the flat, weighty thing in the hand is not a metaphor here; it is where the word starts.

noun · C1

A game in which players stand back from a small post fixed in the ground and throw rings at it, trying to drop the rings over the post.

留在原地、抬不動的大扁石

同樣是一塊扁平的石頭,只是大到沒有人丟得動。它幾千年前被架在直立的石頭上,就一直留在那裡。核心畫面沒變,變的是尺寸,還有它不再飛出去、而是停住。

noun · C2

An ancient monument built from large stones. One source describes it as a small circle of upright stones; others use the word for a group of upright stones with one big flat stone laid across the top, or for that flat top stone by itself.
