    A quilt is a warm, thick cover for a bed. It is made by two layers of cloth together with feathers or another thick, soft stuff in the middle, so the heat stays in. Lines of stitches often run across it, sometimes in a pattern, so the filling does not slide into one corner. People also use quilt as a verb: to quilt something is to it in that way — not only a bed cover, but a jacket or a bag too. In loose home talk, some families call any thick bed cover a quilt, even if it was never sewn like that; a shop that sells handmade ones usually means the sewn kind. It is a calm, ordinary house word, not slang and not fancy.
