    Quilted cloth has layers held together by lines of stitches that cross each other, or run in a pattern. The stitches are not only for looks: they stop the soft filling from sliding about. You meet the word on jackets, bags, oven gloves, and bed covers. A quilted jacket feels and a little puffy. It is an ordinary shop-and-home describing word — not slang, not especially formal. Though actually, some tags say quilted when they mostly mean “thick and sewn,” even if the lines are simple and not a fancy pattern.
