Q is the 17th letter of the English alphabet, sitting between P and R. We say its name like 'cue.' In almost every native English word, Q is followed by U: queen, quick, quiet, square. The pair qu usually sounds like /kw/. A few borrowed words break the pattern — qat, Qatar, qi — and those still look foreign to many English eyes. As a capital it starts names; as a small q it sits inside words. Though actually, a lone Q on a form, a jumper, or a test paper can mean other things, a grade or a name or an abbreviation, but as a letter it is just this shape and this place in the alphabet.
