Puzzlement is the feeling you have when something does not make sense and you cannot work it out yet. Your face may go still; you might or say “Wait — what?” It is the name of that state, not the name of a riddle. She looked at the map in puzzlement. It is a little more formal than confusion, and a little kinder: confusion can mean a mess or panic; puzzlement is “I don’t get this.” Though actually, some writers use it for the thing that puzzles you (the puzzlement of the missing key), but that is looser. The centre of the word is the feeling. You form it from puzzle plus -ment, the ending that turns a verb into a noun for a state or result.
