    A psalter is a book that holds the psalms — often all 150 from the Bible, sometimes with notes for singing them in church. In the Middle Ages a psalter could be a treasure: a book with gold and pictures. Though actually the older meaning was the instrument itself, a kind of harp; the book took the name from the harp that used to go with the songs. In ordinary English now, psalter almost always means the book. You meet it in church, music history, and libraries, not in daily chat.
