A psaltery is an old musical instrument: strings stretched over a flat board, played by plucking with the fingers, not with a bow. It sits in the same word family as psalm and psalter, because the Greek root is about plucking strings. You will see it in museums, old paintings, and writing about medieval music. It is not a word for a guitar or a piano, even if the idea (strings you pluck) is cousin to those. Quite a learned word; most people have never needed it.

組成A later, more bookish spelling of Middle English sauterie, from Old French psalterie, from Latin psaltērium, from Greek psaltērion (a stringed instrument), from psállō, to pluck. Same ancestor as psalter.
