A psalm is a song or a poem that praises God. The ones people mean first are in the Bible, in the book called Psalms — a whole collection, not one famous poem. Churches still read them and sing them. King David is the name most people tie to them, though actually the book was gathered over a long time and not every psalm is his. Outside church, people sometimes stretch the word to any holy song of thanks; that is a looser use. It is old and rather formal in ordinary talk, but very alive in Christian worship. The first letter is silent: you say it like "sahm".

組成From Greek psalmós: first the sound of strings being plucked, then a tune for the harp, and later, in New Testament times, a holy song that could go with any instrument. English took it through Latin and French; Old English already had a form of it too. The p is silent now.
