核心畫面

Start with the flower itself: a low plant, close to the ground, opening soft pale yellow while the year is still cold. It is one of the first flowers out, so seeing it means spring has started. Two things about it carry the rest of the word — its colour, gentle enough to name a shade of paint, and the picture of ground covered with it, a soft path that looks easy to walk on.

From the word’s history

Wiktionary takes primrose from Middle English primerose, from Old French primerose, from Medieval Latin prima (first) + rosa (rose), and notes the name may come from some primroses being among the earliest flowers of spring.

noun · C1

A soft, pale yellow — the colour of primrose flowers.

淡鵝黃色

鋪滿花的那條小路(只在片語裡)

把整片開著花的地面想成一條路:又軟又漂亮,讓人一直走下去,不會停下來問它通到哪裡。英文就用這個畫面講「當下舒服、後來吃苦」的生活方式。這是概念上的連結,不是說這個片語的歷史來源就是如此。

noun · C2

A way of living that is easy and full of pleasure while it lasts, but that does harm to the person after a time.

享樂的歧途
