    Charcoal is a black material made by burning wood slowly without much air, until almost nothing is left but pure carbon. People use it to cook, especially for or barbecue — you've probably seen the black lumps or briquettes people light for a BBQ. Artists also use a soft black stick of charcoal for drawing, which is where the dark grey-black color called "charcoal grey" gets its name.
