A port where a ship stops for a while during a journey from one place to another, to load or unload goods or passengers or to take on supplies, before going on to the next one.

Picture a ship crossing a long distance. It does not go straight through. Someone has drawn up a list of harbours it will pull into on the way, and at each one it ties up, takes something on, hands something over, and leaves again. None of these is where the journey ends and none is home. They are simply the stops. A port of call is one line on that list: a place the journey pauses at because there is something to do there.
