Think of someone going down a line of people and putting the same question to each one, then writing down the answers to see how they add up. That is the whole word. Change who is being asked and the meaning shifts without the picture changing: ask citizens what they think and it is opinion polling; ask them to choose and it is voting; have a program ask a machine, over and over, whether it has anything new, and it is polling in computing.
