A policyholder is the person or company that has bought an insurance policy — the contract that says the insurance company will pay if something goes wrong. If you have bought car insurance, you are the policyholder for that car. If the family’s health insurance is in your name, you are the policyholder.
Though actually, the person who is protected is not always the same person who bought the policy. You might buy life insurance that pays your children: you are the policyholder, and they are the ones who receive the money. Everyday talk often says “the customer” or “the insured,” but in insurance offices “policyholder” is the precise word for the name on the contract as the buyer.
It is a paperwork word. You see it on letters from the company, not in casual chat.
組成From policy + holder. Holder is hold + -er: the person who holds the policy, meaning the insurance contract.
