Picture the flat image a camera hands back to you — one moment of the world caught and held on paper or a screen, ready to look at again any time. Everything else the word does is either making that image or how you turn out inside it.

From the word’s history

From Greek phos 'light' + graphein 'to draw, write' — literally 'a drawing made with light', a word coined around 1839. The camera lets light itself draw the picture, which is exactly what a photo is.

etymonline; Greek phos 'light' + graphein 'to draw/write'; term coined ~1839 (J. Herschel)
