The Pentateuch is the Christian name for the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. They tell the old story of creation, the flood, Abraham’s family, the escape from Egypt, the law given at , and the long walk toward the promised land. Church tradition says Moses wrote them; that is the tidy answer you will hear in many Sunday schools — though actually, a lot of modern Bible scholars think these books were gathered and edited over a long time, by more than one hand. Jewish people usually call this same group the Torah. Be careful there too: Torah can mean just these five books, or, more loosely, Jewish teaching as a whole. Pentateuch is a formal, classroom-and-pulpit word. In ordinary talk people say “the first five books of the Bible” or “the Torah.” Some speakers stretch Pentateuch as if it meant the whole Old Testament. It does not. It is only the opening five.
組成From Ancient Greek pentáteukhos, from pénte (“five”) + teûkhos (“scroll, book”). The first piece goes back to the old Indo-European word for five, *pénkʷe.
