    A pentathlon is a sports contest in which the same person does five different events, and the scores are added up. The ancient Greek pentathlon was running, the long jump, the discus, the javelin, and wrestling. The modern Olympic pentathlon is not the same five: it is fencing, swimming, riding a horse, shooting, and running. So when someone says pentathlon, the honest question is “which five?” The mix has even been tweaked inside the modern Games. You will meet the word on sports pages and at the Olympics; it is not an everyday kitchen-table word unless you follow that sport. Related contests with a different count use the same pattern: a triathlon has three events, a decathlon has ten.
