Parascending is the land version of parasailing. You wear a parachute, a long rope ties you to a car or a winch, and as the vehicle drives forward the wind fills the canopy and lifts you into the sky. When you are high enough, the rope is released and you float back down to the ground on your own. That release is what makes it different from parasailing over water, where you normally stay attached to the boat the whole time and are lowered back down still on the rope. Parascending was popular as a way of training people before they moved on to parachute jumping from aircraft, and as a club sport in Britain. A word about where you will meet this one: parascending is chiefly British, and it is somewhat dated. The activity itself has largely been absorbed into paragliding and into modern towed-launch flying, so younger speakers may not know the word at all. If you say it to an American, expect a blank look. Learn it so you can read it, not so you can use it — for most situations, paragliding or parasailing is the word people will understand.
