Picture something moving downward along a path: a plane losing height, a person walking down a staircase step by step, a trail further and further down a . The word holds that single steady movement from higher to lower — and once you have the picture, it works for anything that comes down on a place, and for any list that runs from big at the top to small at the bottom.
