Ornamentation is the decoration on something — the extra patterns, carvings, or small added shapes that make it look attractive. You can talk about the ornamentation on a building, a cake, a dress, or even a piece of music (extra notes that dress the tune). It is a little more formal than “decoration,” and it usually means the decorative work as a whole, not one single hanging ball on a tree (that smaller thing is an ornament). From ornament + -ation, the ending for an action or its result.
