Something ornate is covered with a lot of decoration — , painted, or detailed until it looks very rich, and sometimes too rich. An ornate gold frame, an ornate church ceiling. Though actually, people also use it for language: ornate writing is full of fancy extra words, and that is not always praise — it can mean the writer is showing off. The word is a learned borrowing from Latin ornatus, “,” from a verb meaning to equip or dress something up. It is the opposite feel of plain or bare.
