One way to hold nimbus: something gathered in a cloud around a centre. In the sky that is the dark, low cloud with rain coming out of it. In a painting the same shape turns bright and wraps a holy head. Either way, a soft mass closes around something and tells you what is inside it — rain, or a saint.
nimbus 可以想成「圍著一個中心聚起來的一團雲」。在天上，它是壓得很低、正在落雨的那朵暗雲。在畫裡，這團雲換成了光，貼在聖人的頭後面繞成一圈。兩邊共同的畫面，是「有東西被一團雲狀的東西圍住」，而且那團東西會告訴你裡面是什麼——是雨，還是一位聖人。

Latin nimbus meant a dark cloud. English first used the word for the ring of light around a holy figure, and in 1803 the weather observer Luke Howard gave the word back its plain Latin meaning, using it for the actual rain cloud.
拉丁文 nimbus 的意思就是「烏雲」。英文先用它指聖像頭上那圈光，一八〇三年英國氣象觀察者 Luke Howard 為雲分類時，把這個字拉回它字面上的意思，用來指真正的雨雲。所以「雨雲」這個看似最基本的用法，在英文裡反而是後來才接上的。
