A dark, heavy rain cloud — the kind of cloud that rain or snow is actually falling out of. It is a weather word, and it also forms part of longer cloud names such as cumulonimbus and nimbostratus.

Latin nimbus meant a dark cloud. English first used the word for the ring of light around a holy figure, and in 1803 the weather observer Luke Howard gave the word back its plain Latin meaning, using it for the actual rain cloud.
拉丁文 nimbus 的意思就是「烏雲」。英文先用它指聖像頭上那圈光，一八〇三年英國氣象觀察者 Luke Howard 為雲分類時，把這個字拉回它字面上的意思，用來指真正的雨雲。所以「雨雲」這個看似最基本的用法，在英文裡反而是後來才接上的。
