An aureole is a bright circle of light. In paintings of holy people, it is the ring of gold around the head — what many students already call a halo. The same word can mean a pale ring around the sun or moon when the air is full of mist. It is a quiet, word; in everyday talk halo or ring of light will do. You may also meet it as a verb in older writing, meaning to put that ring of light around something, but the noun is the one you will actually meet.

組成From Middle English aureole, from Old French aureole, from Medieval Latin aureola (corona), “golden (crown).” It is a doublet of oriole — same old “golden” idea, different path into English.
