You can picture 'neither' as a hand pointing at two choices and pushing both of them away: not this one, and not that one either. There are exactly two things on the table, and the word shuts the door on both at once. Every use grows from that single gesture — whether it's choosing between two things (neither cup), echoing someone's negative ('I can't' — 'Neither can I'), or pairing up with 'nor' to knock down two statements together.
