Naturopathy is the system of treating illness with what its followers call natural methods — plants, food, water, rest, and changes in daily life — instead of, or sometimes beside, the drugs and operations of ordinary hospital medicine. A person who practises it is a naturopath; the describing word is naturopathic. It is a fairly modern name for a mix of older ideas, and people still argue hard about it: supporters say it looks at the whole person and avoids harsh drugs; many scientists say a lot of it has not been shown to work in careful tests, and a few treatments can even delay care you really need. You will see the word in health books and clinic names. It is not everyday kitchen English. It is also not the same as Chinese medicine, even though both may use plants; they come from different traditions and use different words in English.
