In a dictionary or grammar book, n. is the short written label for noun — a word for a person, a place, a thing, or an idea (teacher, , apple, hope). You almost never say “n.” out loud as a word; you read it as “noun.” It sits beside an entry so you can see the word class at a glance, often next to v. (verb), adj. (adjective), or adv. (adverb). Though actually, the same little n. is used for other things in other kinds of notes, so the meaning depends on where you are standing. In this sense it is the grammar label, not a spoken word and not the n you meet in maths.
