If work or study is multidisciplinary, people from different jobs or different areas of study take part in it. A doctor, a nurse, a social worker, and a teacher might all sit on one team around one child. A chemist and an animal scientist might share one project. Each person still has their own field; they bring it to the same table. You will see this word a lot in universities, hospitals, and research papers. It sounds a little official. In everyday talk, people might say “a mixed team” or “people from different jobs.” One person’s training can also be called multidisciplinary if they draw on more than one field — but the heart of the word is still “more than one area of study,” not “this person is good at everything.” Though actually, another word sits right beside it: interdisciplinary. People use them as twins, but they are not quite the same. Multidisciplinary is “many fields in one room.” Interdisciplinary is “the fields actually mix” — they borrow tools from each other, not only stand side by side. In real life, a poster or a grant will often say multidisciplinary when they mean a bit of both. The tidy difference is useful; speakers are not always so careful.
