    the short written form of the word manuscript: a book, story, or other piece of writing done by hand or typed by the writer, before it is printed.

    「ms」是 manuscript（手稿）的書面縮寫，寫在圖書館目錄、博物館標示、出版社或編輯的筆記上；說出來的時候，多數人還是唸完整的 manuscript。可以想成它留下這個長字的頭和尾兩個字母，把一個很長的字塞進小小的一格；複數要寫成 mss（最後一個字母重複一次），這是英文老式縮寫變複數的寫法。它跟稱呼女性的 Ms.（女士）長得很像，但那是完全不同的字，Ms. 後面通常接姓氏，例如 Ms. Chen。

Think of ms as a note scribbled in the margin of publishing work: it is not a word you say, it is a two-letter stand-in for manuscript — the writer's own copy of a book or story, or typed, before any printer has touched it.
