From Middle English modifien, from Middle French modifier, from Latin modificare, from modus 'measure' + facere 'to make'.

Picture a small change made on purpose so a thing fits better — the design stays what it was, but a detail is altered to suit. Modify is that. Grammar borrows the same idea: an adjective sitting next to a noun does not replace it, it adjusts what the noun means.

可以想成：為了讓一樣東西更合用而做的小改動——原本的設計還在，只是某個細節被調過。modify 就是這個動作。文法把同樣的概念借了過去：一個形容詞放在名詞旁邊，並沒有取代那個名詞，而是調整了它的意思範圍——這正是「修飾」這個譯法的由來。
