When we call an idea, a plan, or a method misconceived, we mean it was built on a wrong picture of the facts — so it is not a good plan, even if the person meant well. The work may look tidy; the starting thought was wrong. It is fairly formal. Teachers, critics, and people in offices use it. It is not the same as silly, badly made, or badly run: those judge the finish. Misconceived judges the seed. You can misconceive something (a rarer verb), and then the plan is misconceived. Though actually, people sometimes stretch it to mean only “I dislike this idea.” The careful meaning is narrower: this idea rests on a mistake about how the world is.
