You can picture a school where the bell, the clothes and the walking are all the army's. There are classes, exams and dorms, like any school. But the uniform never comes off, the day starts with drill, and a rank sits on every shoulder. That is the picture both meanings share: a school whose daily shape is borrowed from the military.
