A cadet is someone who is training to become an officer in the army, navy, air force, or police. They are not a full officer yet. They live and train at an academy or in a special programme, wear a uniform, and work at both study and drill. In some countries, schools also have cadet clubs, where teenagers practise military-style skills without joining the army yet. The word is the normal, slightly formal word in those worlds — not a joke and not an insult. It does not have to mean a child; many cadets are young adults. Do not mix it up with a golf caddie (the person who carries the bags). The two words look a little alike, and they even share an old French root, but they are different jobs.
