Menopause is the time when a woman's periods stop for good, most often around the age of fifty (a little earlier or later is still normal). The ovaries slowly make less of the hormones that run the monthly cycle, so bleeding ends. It does not usually happen on one birthday; there are often a few messy years of change around it. It is a natural stage of life, not an illness, though the sudden heat, the thin sleep, and the mood swings can be hard, and some women use hormone treatment. After menopause, a woman cannot become pregnant in the ordinary way. Do not mix it up with : that is the monthly bleed itself, which is what comes to an end. English also uses menopause as a verb ('she menopaused at 48'), but that sounds clinical and a bit ; most people keep it as a noun.
