A lumberyard is a place — often an open yard with sheds — where cut wood is kept and then sold to builders and to people doing work at home. You go there for planks, beams, and sheets. It is not the forest where trees are cut down, and it is not always the mill where logs are first sawn. The word is strongly American; in Britain people more often say timber yard. In Taiwan the nearest everyday place is usually a shop, not a huge outdoor lot. The tone is ordinary and practical.
