Picture a small hut at the side of a road, kept for whoever needs to stop for the night. You are not moving in; you are staying. From that one picture English gets both the general idea — somewhere to sleep, the thing a job or a trip pays for — and the older, concrete version of it: a couple of rooms in another person's house, rented by the week.

From the word’s history

The packet's Wiktionary entry gives lodge + -ing, with lodge traced back through Old French loge, a hut or shelter — which is the hut in the core picture.
