noun · B2
The letters and words written, drawn or printed on something, thought of as how they look — their style, size and colour — rather than what they say.
字樣;字體的樣子
Stand in front of an old shop sign. You can read what it says — but you can also look at it the other way, and see only shapes: how thick the strokes are, how the gold catches the light, how evenly the words are spaced. That second way of looking is what this word is for. Lettering is words treated as things that were made, not as things that were said. From there the word splits in the simplest possible way: the shapes on the sign, and the skill of the hand that made them.
